Once again the GOP is about to screw with a necessary thing. If the GOP has their way, the National Weather Service will lose 126 million dollars of its budget. This agency doesn’t just tell us about the weather, it also tells us when, and where, there’s going to be a tsunami.
That’s right. The National Weather Service is the parent of the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii. Now, in light of the tragedy in Japan and the ensuing tidal wave that raced across an ocean and hit Hawaii and many other areas, I don’t think this is a very good idea. If any agency needs to keep their funding, this is the one.
The United States has a lot of shoreline and a lot of islands under its flag, Hawaii and the Aleutians to name a few. It strikes me that the Tsunami Warning Center is a necessity, as the recent earthquake in Japan proved.
This cut won’t affect the buoys that alert the Tsunami Center but it will cut the people who can interpret the data and send out the warnings. This is not a smart move by Congress. It risks millions of lives all over the Pacific, not just in the United States.
If the GOP wants to cut “pork”, let them start with their own salaries, medical coverage, personal expense accounts (paid for by us little ol’ tax payers) drivers and office staff. Then move on to the pork programs like studying methane production from cows passing gas and its effect on the environment. Pure pork. And there are a LOT of programs like that which should be cut and would save a billion or two a year.
Then, let’s consider cutting foreign aid to countries that hate us or, at the very least, resent us. One hundred and fifty countries get aid from the United States. It totals up to about 30 BILLION dollars annually. Thirty billion would definitely help cut the deficit. Even half of that would take a good chunk out of it.
Congress is looking in the wrong place when it comes to cutting spending. Stop taking away the programs that will save lives and keep people safe. Instead, cut what isn’t really necessary and let Congress tighten its own belt instead of punishing the people they represent.
