Letter Writing is a Lost Art?……..

Letter writing is a lost art to most of us. But it seems like 47 members of the Senate have resurrected this form of communication and have broken the law while they’re doing it.

What the heck am I talking about, you ask? Ask Iran……..and Tom Cotton.

Once again, the Grand Old Party has defied the laws of this country, gone over the head of the President and the State Department and sent a threatening letter to Iran letting them know that any agreement for nuclear disarmament that they make with the U.S. “may not” be honored with the next president.  A tacit threat.

What they have failed to realize, these 47 morons, is that they have broken a law that’s been in place since 1799 and amended in 1994 for reasons like this one.  It’s called the Logan Act and puts people, not authorized by the President or the State Department to treat with other countries, into prison for 3 years.

This was the brilliant idea of a Senator named Tom Cotton.  Not too long in office so he doesn’t understand the rules of government or the chain of command…….maybe.  However, the other 46 should since they’ve been in there since Moses was a baby.

It isn’t treason, per se, but it can be considered sedition.  For those who don’t know what sedition is……I had to look it up……..here’s the definition.

SEDITION:
[ siˈdiSHən ]

NOUN
conduct or speech inciting people to rebel against the authority of a state or monarch.
synonyms: rabble-rousing · incitement to rebel · subversion · troublemaking

Need I say more?  But I will anyway.

Then, the GOP  invited the leader of Israel, Prime Minister Netanyahu, to speak to the House and Senate….without the President’s or State Departments okay.  Again, overstepping their authority.  Netanyahu proceeds to tell them that they shouldn’t listen to the president and override everything he says.  He demands we back them in a war against Iran while the President and other countries are working on a nuclear disarmament treaty with Iran.  A totally subversive and war mongering speech and the GOP ate it up.

And it backfired on them.  Most newpapers had a field day with this and rumors of treason began to bandied around.  And not only in this country but all over the world.

Now the infamous letter to Iran.  Here follows two links to a downloadable copy of the “letter”.

It’s not blatant.  It’s couched in semi-diplomatic terms.

Now, not only do these 47 morons threaten the Iranian government (in a mildly diplomatic way), they totally blow the interpretation of the Constitution.  Iran, by the way, has taken them to task and schooled them about OUR Constitution.  I hope they learned something from that little part of the debacle.

Now comes the Logan Act.  What’s that, you ask

The Logan Act according to the Supreme Court is a law that states — “The President alone has the power to speak or listen as a representative of the nation. He makes treaties with the advice and consent of the Senate; but he alone negotiates. Into the field of negotiation the Senate cannot intrude, and Congress itself is powerless to invade it.”

Yeah, the Senate blew that one.  Totally.

Exact wording of the Logan Act: “Any citizen of the United States, wherever he may be, who, without authority of the United States, directly or indirectly commences or carries on any correspondence or intercourse with any foreign government or any officer or agent thereof, with intent to influence the measures or conduct of any foreign government or of any officer or agent thereof, in relation to any disputes or controversies with the United States, or to defeat the measures of the United States, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both.”

So, we have 46 seditious members of Congress and an Israeli Prime Minister who is prodding Congress to further acts of sedition and war.  They may be our allies, but they certainly are not our friends in this matter.  No sane person wants war.

Does anyone else see a problem with this?

If not, you should.

President Obama and the rest of the world’s leaders are trying for a peaceful solution so Iran doesn’t get, and use, nukes.  Our Congress is undermining these efforts at every level, as is Netanyahu.

I don’t know about anyone else, but peace is always preferable to nuclear war.  And that is what will happen if Israel’s hawks, and the United States GOP, have any say in the matter.

God help us all if they succeed.
